Player outlook
Jalen Brunson pays off for managers willing to give up the paint
The Finals MVP brings scoring, assists, and free throws to a draft, and almost nothing near the rim. Build around that absence and he plays like an early pick; ignore it and he quietly drains a balanced roster.

Forty-five points in the game that ended a 53-year wait. One block every ten games.
Both lines belong to Jalen Brunson, and a nine-category draft has to pay for both. The first made him Finals MVP as New York closed out San Antonio for its first title since 1973. The second is what he contributes near the rim, and nothing about a championship changes it.
Model Zero ranks him 50th per game on 24.0 points, 6.3 assists, 2.4 threes, 47.5% shooting, and 83.8% at the line, with 3.0 rebounds, 0.8 steals, and 0.1 blocks. Ball Ranks' totals board, which rewards his 70 projected games, has him 30th. That 20-place gap, and the three empty categories, are the entire draft question.
Even 28.7 points never made him a top-25 player
Brunson's best nine-category season came in 2023–24: 28.7 points, 6.7 assists, 77 games, and a 27th-place per-game finish. His other three New York seasons finished 41st, 47th, and 44th. The scoring has been elite for four years. The rank has not followed, because the categories around the scoring never move.
On our board, his points rank 12th in value among the top 200 players, his assists 15th, and his free throws 28th. Those are a star's numbers. His blocks are tied for the least valuable in the same group, and his rebounds sit near the bottom too. The 0.8 steals land close to neutral, and 47.5% shooting on 18.0 attempts is a small plus for a guard.
The surprise is where the damage actually comes from. The single most expensive part of his line is not a missing category. It is 2.2 turnovers, which cost him more than the absent blocks and nearly three times as much as the missing rebounds.
Give up the paint and he plays like a top-ten pick
That profile is built for one strategy. Remove rebounds, steals, and blocks from the count and Brunson's projection ranks about ninth on our board. Punting only rebounds and blocks puts him around 14th. Last season's actual results agree: 12th on the board that punted rebounds, steals, and blocks, and 20th on the one that punted rebounds and blocks.
Those builds want exactly what he supplies: points, assists, threes, and a free-throw percentage carried on 5.6 attempts a game, enough volume to steady a roster stacked with guards and wings. He does not need help in any category the build is still trying to win.
The builds he quietly breaks are the ones that look compatible at first glance. Punt free throws, the usual plan after an early center, wipes out one of his three best categories and leaves the empty blocks in place; he falls to about 67th. Punt assists drops him to about 79th. A balanced roster that drafts him at 50 now owes the rest of the draft nearly all of its blocks and most of its rebounds, and that debt compounds by the eighth round.
Seventy games make roto his friendliest format
Brunson has played 68, 77, 65, and 74 games in four New York seasons, and Model Zero projects 70. That record explains the jump from 50th per game to 30th in totals. Last season he finished 44th per game and 26th in totals; in 2023–24, he was 16th in totals.
The format decides which number to use. In head-to-head, a missed game is one quiet night inside one week, so the per-game rank is the fair price. In roto and games-cap leagues, 70 games of 24 points and 5.6 free throws keep arriving while fragile players around him collect zeros, and the totals rank is the one to draft from.
The Knicks give him the shots and show the cure
New York's other scorers do not threaten his volume. Karl-Anthony Towns projects for 13.1 shots, OG Anunoby 12.3, and Mikal Bridges 11.6. Brunson's 18.0 attempts put nearly five shots a night between him and the next Knick.
His teammates also describe the roster that fits around him. Anunoby ranks 46th per game, and steals are his strongest category: 1.5 a night with 0.7 blocks and only 1.6 turnovers. Bridges ranks 79th per game but 31st in totals on 80 projected games and 1.2 turnovers. Towns, 24th per game, brings 10.4 rebounds. A Brunson roster wants that kind of wing or big in the next two rounds, someone who adds steals and blocks without asking for shots.
A full-minutes Brunson would make 50th look timid
Model Zero projects 32.5 minutes, down from 35.0 last season, and 24.0 points on 18.0 shots. That is close to the version from January onward last season, when he averaged 23.7 points on 18.6 attempts across 44 games. The first 30 games told a different story: 29.4 points on 21.8 attempts at 47.6% shooting. The playoffs looked like that early version, with 28.4 points over 19 games in 36.9 minutes.
If New York leans on him the way it did in the spring, the points and free throws climb, and the per-game rank moves back toward the 27th-place finish from 2023–24. Managers drafting him for scoring get that ceiling built into the price.
The case for caution sits in his left wrist, the shooting hand. Brunson had surgery in July on an injury he first felt during the Eastern Conference finals, spent much of the offseason in a cast, and announced he was fully cleared in late September. His shooting was already sliding before the injury appeared, from 47.6% across his first 30 games last season to 46.0% over the final 44, with a 44.1% March. A slow start from the wrist would hit both percentages, including the free throws that carry so much of his value.
Draft the Finals MVP for the build, not the trophy
In a 12-team, nine-category head-to-head league, Brunson's price is around pick 50, early in the fifth round. Take him in the third when your first two picks already gave up the paint, or in roto, where 70 games carry him near pick 30. If your roster opened with a punt-free-throw center, let someone else pay for the parade.
