Drake Maye already broke out. Now we're pricing the encore.

New England answered Drake Maye's MVP runner-up season by trading for A.J. Brown. That is what a team does when it thinks its quarterback is ready to win now. Fantasy drafters answered by moving Maye from an ADP near 110 last summer to 51.6 this August — from a tenth-round bet to the start of round five.

Ball Ranks is even more aggressive. In our August 29 PPR snapshot, Maye sits 47th overall and QB2. But that rank does not mean we expect another 352-point season. Model One projects 275.5 PPR points, a drop of 76.5 from 2025. The case for Maye at this price is not that every career-best number repeats. It is that his rushing, age, new top receiver, and market price give him more ways to pay off than most quarterbacks.

The breakout lasted all season

Maye did not build his 2025 finish on one hot month. In Weeks 1–9, he averaged 21.1 fantasy points across nine games. In Weeks 10–18, he averaged 20.3 across eight. His passing touchdowns split 17 in the first stretch and 14 in the second; his four rushing scores split evenly. The production moved around, but it never disappeared.

The full leap was enormous. Maye went from 2,276 passing yards, 15 touchdowns, and ten interceptions as a rookie to 4,394 yards, 31 touchdowns, and eight interceptions in year two. His completion rate rose from 66.6% to 72.0%, while his yards per attempt jumped from 6.7 to 8.9. Those figures come from his official NFL career stats, which also show 450 rushing yards and four rushing touchdowns in 2025.

That earned more than fantasy points. Maye finished second to Matthew Stafford in Associated Press MVP voting, led New England to the Super Bowl, and started every regular-season game. There is no role question and no competition for the job. The only question is how much of that second-year jump survives.

A.J. Brown raises the ceiling without erasing the risk

The Patriots did not ask Maye to repeat the season with the same receivers. They acquired A.J. Brown from Philadelphia on June 1. Brown had 78 catches for 1,003 yards and seven touchdowns in 2025, his sixth 1,000-yard season in seven years. New England also added Romeo Doubs after his 55-catch, 724-yard season in Green Bay.

Brown gives Maye a target who can turn an accurate throw into a much larger gain. The relationship was still being built in June, when Mike Vrabel called their connection important and emphasized the need for practice repetitions (Patriots.com). By August 17, the team's own practice report said the pair had found more success on deep throws (Patriots.com). Those are encouraging team-reported practice notes, not regular-season proof.

Brown does not guarantee another 31 passing touchdowns. He does make the receiving group less dependent on Maye creating a perfect play. With Brown, Doubs, Hunter Henry, and DeMario Douglas, a good decision has a better chance to become a fantasy-producing one.

The rushing points keep the floor from collapsing

The cleanest part of Maye's fantasy outlook is his legs. He ran 103 times for 450 yards and four touchdowns in 2025. That was 71.5 fantasy points before counting a single pass — just over four points per game. He also ran for 421 yards in only 13 rookie-season games, so this is not a one-year trick.

That matters because the passing numbers have room to fall. Maye led the NFL in completion rate, yards per attempt, and passer rating in 2025, according to his Patriots player page. Model One does not assume he will repeat all three league-leading rates. It pulls his projection toward a more ordinary passing season while preserving much of the rushing value.

This is also why 275.5 projected points and QB2 on the card can coexist. The points are Model One's estimate. The board order combines that estimate with live draft price and how much better a player is than the next usable option at his position. Among quarterbacks, Maye's projected total is closer to the middle of the starting group than second. His overall rank says the complete draft price is still reasonable, not that 352 points is the expectation.

The schedule is the quiet warning

Our schedule calculation gives New England the fifth-toughest set of passing matchups for 2026, based on how many passing yards this year's opponents allowed last season. Those opponents allowed 214.5 passing yards per game. It is a simple backward-looking measure — coaching and roster changes can make it wrong — but it is another reason not to copy and paste Maye's 2025 line.

The timing is manageable for fantasy. New England's official schedule places its bye in Week 11, before the main fantasy playoff weeks. The Patriots do close with Kansas City, the Jets, Denver, and Miami, so the late-season path is not empty of difficult defenses.

Where we could be wrong

Model One may be too cautious with a 24-year-old quarterback whose team just handed him an elite receiver. Maye's 2025 improvement was not confined to one brief streak, and 450 rushing yards give him a path to beat the projection even if his passing rates fall. If Brown immediately becomes the reliable downfield and red-zone target New England expects, 275.5 could look like an overcorrection.

The other mistake would be treating last year's 352 points as the new floor. Maye just led the league in three major passing measures at once. Paying for all of that to repeat leaves little room for a merely excellent third season.

The verdict

At an August 29 ADP of 51.6, Maye costs an early fifth-round pick. Our board would take him a few spots earlier, around 47, because the rushing production and improved receivers protect him from some of the expected passing drop. He is worth the price near the round-four/five turn; he is not worth chasing a full round ahead of it.
